Advocacy
Bold and transformational steps are necessary to shift the world onto a sustainable and climate-resilient path. Camco advocates for the strategic and catalytic deployment of global funds by policymakers and financiers, strengthening the enabling environment and scaling up climate finance mobilisation for implementing the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda.
Achieving truly transformational change requires that we work to reduce real and perceived risks in emerging markets. In 2023, Camco expanded its advocacy role in the sector, engaging with industry networks like the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE), Africa Minigrid Developers Association (AMDA), SEforAll, Power for All, the Mini-grids Funders Group (MGF) and others.
In November, we published Pathways to a greener future: Accelerating finance mobilisation for just and climate-aligned growth in developing markets, the first of two papers consolidating our insights from on-the-ground experience working to unlock private capital for development and climate goals in developing markets.
In partnership with the AMDA, Camco organised a roundtable discussion in Zambia to facilitate dialogue among developers, financiers, government stakeholders and its development partners. This event aimed to address regulatory uncertainty in the mini-grid sector and provide a strong basis for ensuring ongoing enabling environment development efforts improve the sector's 'bankability' for successful investment mobilisation. Discussions held during the event provided input for the Zambia Decentralized Renewable Energy Days in April 2024.
Throughout 2023, Camco also actively engaged with the UK government, supporting the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Africa's policy inquiry on UK-African partnerships for just energy transitions. Geoff Sinclair, Camco's CEO, serves on the inquiry's advisory panel, while Camco’s Policy Lead provided evidence at the opening oral hearing. We also provided written evidence submissions to both the APPG for Africa and the UK government's call for evidence on international development and climate change.
