Shifting the world onto a sustainable and climate-resilient path requires bold and transformational action. Camco advocates for the strategic and catalytic deployment of global funds by policymakers and financiers, strengthening the enabling environment and scaling up climate finance mobilisation to support the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda.
Realising genuine transformational change demands that we address both real and perceived risks in emerging markets. In 2024, Camco maintained an active advocacy role in the climate finance space and the SDG 7 agenda engaging with organisations and industry networks including the Green Climate Fund, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforAll), the Global Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), the Mini-grids Funders’ Group (MGF), Africa Minigrid Developers Association (AMDA), the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE), and others.
In September, Camco’s Policy and Market Development Lead, Ieva Indriunaite, took part in a workshop organised by SEForAll and the Africa School of Regulators in Kigali. The workshop aimed to explore innovative integrated business models for mini-grids and rural electrification more broadly that would ensure both long-term sustainability and affordability to end-users. Camco shared insights from the REPP mini-grid investment portfolio to explore what role the private sector could play in the integrated electrification models.
Camco continued its advocacy efforts in Zambia to address regulatory uncertainty in the mini-grid sector and provide a strong basis for ensuring ongoing enabling environment development efforts improve the sector's 'bankability' for successful investment mobilisation. This included the publication of a white paper in October, co-authored with AMDA, which strengthened the case for urgent regulatory reforms and offered high-level recommendations for Zambia’s policymakers.
Throughout 2024, Camco continued its active engagement with the UK government, supporting the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Africa's policy inquiry on UK-African partnerships for just energy transitions. Camco CEO, Geoff Sinclair, serves on the inquiry's advisory panel and has been sharing his expertise and guidance throughout the process. The final report, set to be launched in 2025, is expected to provide valuable insights to inform the UK’s international development and climate policy.
